Banding Birds

Research and the BB Challenge

The Texas Banded Bird Challenge (TBBC) records reported birds each  year as these banded Eurasian Collared Dove are harvested and called in, the data collected on them will provide more information about this invasive species that now call Texas their home. The information gathered from this research can only be obtained if birds are reported. In order to improve the ratio of bands reported, prizes can be won by harvesting one of these TDHA banded birds. Every band is a winner but if you are entered in the TBBC you can win one of many other fantastic prizes. There are also five different divisions in which prizes are won.

The Process for Research

The Texas Banded Bird Challenge (TBBC) is a research project developed to study Eurasian Collared Doves in order to learn more about their migration patterns,  habitat preferences, age and more, as data is collected over the years to come. Birds are trapped in Texas, banded in Texas and released in various areas all over the state of Texas. Instincts such as why they move, where they are moving to, what distances they will travel and what their primary instincts are for migration is data we hope to improve upon over time. We also study behaviors such as interactions with other migratory birds like mourning dove and white-winged dove to name the most common in Texas.

Banded and Released in Texas

Each bird is carefully handled for banding then released into the wild.
