"Gunner - the blind bird dog"

I wanted to share a story sent to us by one of our followers on Facebook, Bryan Rowland. This is a very special story about a man and his dog!

Gunner is a 6 year old black lab that went blind during the summer when he was a little over a year old. He underwent 5 different surgeries in San Antonio, but all were unsuccessful in regaining his vision. After working everyday with him that summer on voice commands he has never missed an opening day dove, quail, or duck hunt. He listens to commands from me and my dad on where to go, and once he gets close or downwind he rarely loses a bird. He has an amazing nose, and does not let us go hunting without him. Not only does he bird hunt, he is an amazing deer tracker, and has been featured on a local television show in South Texas. On that specific show, he trailed a 2 day wounded buck for over a mile before finding it dead curled up in a cactus pile. He is also a great fishing partner, coming with us on almost every trip. He sits on the drivers cushion of the boat most of the time, but is a big fan of wade fishing. After being blind the majority of his life, he gets along very well, and a lot of people that we take hunting or fishing don't even realize he's blind until we say something about it or he runs into something. I have had multiple quail and waterfowl guides offer to buy him from me after they have hunted with him. We have a German Shorthair that hunts with us as well, and when she goes on point quail hunting, I tell Gunner "birds up" and he will go in and flush the birds out. He continuously surprises everyone with his amazing ability to find birds that most other dogs have already given up on, and I have seen him make some retrieves that no one could believe if they were not there. He likes dove and quail hunting the most and always knows when we are going to go. As soon as a shot gun is brought out he freaks out. I'm not sure if he can just smell the gunpowder or just read our minds, but as soon as someone grabs a shotgun he gets all excited and starts whining and running in circles by the truck. He won't do that with a rifle, but always seems to know when we are going bird hunting.
